Memorial Day is such a special holiday for us Minnesotans. Not only does it give us a chance to remember those we have lost, but it is also the non-official beginning of our beloved summer! Needless to say, this holiday deserves a celebration with your family or friends, and we have a few ideas to help you plan the perfect day for you and your Memorial Day crew.
If you are a young couple, the possibilities are really endless for how you can celebrate Memorial Day. One of our favorite ideas for this group is to take advantage of the long weekend to explore one or two of the 67 beautiful State Parks we have in Minnesota. If you want to make it a quick day trip, there are multiple options that are just a few hours away; try Glacial Lakes State Park to the North, Kilen Woods to the South, Nerstrand Big Woods to the East, or Camden State Park to the West. If you want to spend the weekend camping somewhere new, check out the MN DNR list of State Parks and select somewhere new to explore together!
Families with Young Children
Parents with young children are always looking for ways to entertain their kids while finding their own enjoyment in the activities as well. With a lot of annual events being cancelled, here are a few ideas that you can do with your family to still make the most of your Memorial Day weekend:
- Visit a loved one’s grave. This is a great opportunity to help you kids understand the true meaning behind Memorial Day. Plan a picnic for after your visit to make it even more enjoyable for your little ones.
- Organize a tournament! Invite your family over and organize a day of games in your yard or a nearby park. Include games like softball, touch football, bags, and bocce ball.
- Host a barbecue. Invite a few people over who have kids too and enjoy a Memorial Day barbecue together!
Connect with friends and family if you are looking for some interaction, or plan a solo weekend trip if you are single person to make the most of your Memorial Day weekend. You can join in any of the above activities listed for couples or families, but you also have the freedom to carve your own path on this long weekend. Plan a long bike ride, take a long drive up to the North Shore, or plan a day filled with the activities you love the most (think kayaking, reading, etc.).
We hope these ideas help you to plan the perfect Memorial Day weekend to kickoff the start of an amazing summer!
